If you have been following our deep dives into the Italian avant-garde scene, the name Richard Green (also known as Riccardo) likely rings a bell. We’ve previously explored the intricate textures of Archaic and the rhythmic curiosity of Big Number, but to truly understand his trajectory, we have to look back at the foundation of his ambitious music trilogy.

Currently undergoing a well-deserved resurgence, “Midnight” inspires as a cornerstone of Green’s first EP in this series. Clocking in at over four minutes, the track is a masterclass in genre-bending, seamlessly weaving classical foundations with the smoky, improvisational spirit of jazz and blues. Recorded near Piacenza, Italy, the production quality is immediate and immersive. The collaboration features the renowned Irene Veneziano, whose piano work provides a sophisticated emotional anchor, alongside the Archimia String Quartet, a group famous for elevating the works of Italy’s most prestigious songwriters.

What makes “Midnight” stand out in a scenery of fast-paced hits is its commitment to atmosphere. It feels less like a standard single and more like a cinematic score. Green explains that the project was born from a desire to merge the old world with the new, avoiding direct outside influences to focus on a purely original fusion. This track, while initially debuting following his experimental 2020 release Dark Horses, remains a timeless anchor in his neoclassical journey. It captures a specific, relaxing “old soul” energy that proves quality doesn’t have an expiration date. As Green prepares to pivot into new genres, this trilogy stands as a testament to his versatility and his ability to make high-art feel accessible and deeply personal.
