The Muster Point Project is in again and this time kicks off 2025 with an electrifying new single, “Darlin’.” Known for weaving folk rock and alt-country influences into his work, Kevin Franco takes a sharp left turn, steering straight into punk-inspired territory. With its raw energy and tongue-in-cheek storytelling, this track proves that TMPP is unafraid to shake things up.
Clocking in at just under three minutes, “Darlin’” wastes no time. A punchy guitar riff and pounding drums set the stage before Franco’s vocals charge in, recounting the minor frustrations of daily life. He’s running late for work, his breakfast is cold, and to top it all off, the waitress keeps calling him “darlin’.” What starts as irritation soon shifts, culminating in the humorous twist: “I leave a tip ‘cause the waitress is calling me darlin’.” It’s a moment of surrender, a realization that sometimes, a little bit of flattery can turn a bad day around.
Instrumentally, the song rides a fine line between garage rock grit and vintage punk attitude. Franco, who plays every instrument except drums, delivers a performance that feels both tight and spontaneous. Montreal-based drummer Marcello Effori attacks his kit with relentless precision, propelling the song forward like a runaway train. Then comes the unexpected twist—a progressive-leaning bridge that momentarily steps outside the song’s driving rhythm, adding depth before slamming back into the final chorus.
