Los Angeles-based Mountains of Jura casts another spell with their sophomore album, simply titled “Mountains of Jura” (also referred to as “The Lynx Album”). This 7-track exploration of psychedelic shoegaze and progressive rock builds upon the foundation laid on their 2022 debut, taking the listener on a captivating sonic adventure.

The album’s strength lies in its ability to balance familiar elements with a fresh perspective. Lush, layered guitars and reverb-drenched vocals, reminiscent of Slowdive and Sigur Rós, create a dreamy, ethereal atmosphere. Tracks like “Old Leon” and “Lost Days” unfold gradually, their hypnotic melodies weaving intricate blends of sound. Yet, Mountains of Jura doesn’t settle for a mere sonic imitation.

Intricate rhythmic shifts and dynamic changes add a welcome layer of complexity. Songs like “Reverse Creek” erupt with sudden bursts of energy, recalling the post-rock intensity of Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Mogwai. This unexpected infusion keeps the album engaging, taking the listener by surprise even as it comforts with familiar textures.

The band’s collaborative spirit shines through in the songwriting process. Each song begins as an improvisation, with each member contributing their own unique voice. This approach fosters a sense of organic cohesion.

The closing track, “Oracle,” is a nine-minute epic that encapsulates the album’s essence. Layered guitars and ethereal vocals from the scene while percussion sets the pace, ranging from slow and calm to fast like a racing heartbeat.

Mountains of Jura have successfully carved their own niche within the shoegaze genre. “The Lynx Album” is a testament to their creative spirit and musicianship. It offers a captivating blend of familiar and unexpected sounds. Whether you’re a shoegaze aficionado or simply seeking a sonic escape, this album is sure to transport you to a world of its own.
