Reggae

Reggae, a distinctive music genre, originated in Jamaica and intriguingly has its roots in the R&B music of New Orleans. The direct precursor to reggae is ska, which was an uptempo and rhythmic variation inspired by the New Orleans R&B that Jamaican musicians heard on their transistor radios. Ska, with its skittering guitar and syncopated rhythms, served as their interpretation of R&B and gained significant popularity in the early 1960s. However, during an excessively hot summer, playing or dancing to ska became arduous, leading to a slower beat and the birth of reggae.

Since its inception, reggae has displayed remarkable versatility similar to the blues. It lends itself to various interpretations, ranging from the melodic rock steady of Alton Ellis to the rock and folk-influenced songwriting of Bob Marley and the trippy, almost psychedelic soundscapes crafted by dub artists like Lee “Scratch” Perry. Over time, reggae has ventured into the mainstream through vibrant and lively events like “reggae sunsplash” festivals, and the influence of pop-oriented bands like UB40. However, more adventurous reggae artists such as Marley and Perry have left an indelible mark on countless musicians in genres spanning reggae, folk, rock, and dance. Their contributions continue to echo throughout the realm of popular music.
