Since its inception, when early rockers blended elements of country and blues, rock has been characterized by its energy, rebelliousness, and infectious hooks. However, as the genre matured, it gradually shed these defining traits and started equally valuing craftsmanship and pushing musical boundaries. Consequently, everything from Chuck Berry’s pounding three-chord rock anthems to the Beatles’ melodious harmonies and Sonic Youth’s dissonant, atonal white noise has been labeled as “rock.” This expansive categorization accurately reflects the fact that rock & roll had a distinct sound and image for a relatively short period. Throughout its lifespan, rock has continuously fragmented, giving rise to new styles and variations every few years – from Brill Building Pop and heavy metal to dance-pop and grunge.
