Sometimes a song finds its way into the rotation and completely halts the noise. Nashville-based singer-songwriter Scott Clay has achieved exactly that with his latest single, “The Compass and the Wheel.” From the very first string arrangement in the intro, the track sends a chill down the spine, establishing a cinematic standard that Clay masterfully maintains until the final note.

Recorded at the legendary Farmland Studios in Nashville, the record boasts an elite lineup of session heavyweights, including guitarist Guthrie Trapp, bassist Steve Mackey, and drummer Greg Morrow. Together, they craft a rich, organic soundscape that serves as the perfect vessel for Clay’s evocative storytelling. The narrative is deeply rooted in history, inspired by Hampton Sides’ nonfiction masterpiece In the Kingdom of Ice. Clay explores the harrowing journey of the USS Jeannette and Captain George DeLong, who spent two years trapped in Arctic ice floes.

The lyrics serve as a sonic bridge to the poignant letters DeLong wrote to his wife, Emma, back in Brooklyn while fighting for survival against the elements.
“I dreamt I was back home / You were lying there with me / The world was warm and peaceful / The air was soft and sweet / But my longings pulled me far away / To this icy, dreadful sea / Now the waves around are caving in / I fear that I may never leave.”

The chorus is an irresistible, catchy anchor in a sea of emotional weight:
“How I wish I could remain in those gentle distant days / Where the fire warm souls of both our feet / Despite all these raging waves / I see comfort in the faith / That the compass and the wheel / Will lead me home.”

Across its four minute run, Clay shows a steady hand, balancing narrative and melody without overreaching. If this release is any indication, Scott Clay is building something worth paying attention to. Keep him on your radar.

LYRICS: The Compass and the Wheel
By Scott Clay

(Verse 1) I dreamt I was back home You were lying there with me The world was warm and peaceful The air was soft and sweet But my longings pulled me far away To this icy, dreadful sea Now the waves around are caving in I fear that I may never leave

(Chorus) How I wish I could remain in those gentle distant days Where the fire warm souls of both our feet Despite all these raging waves I see comfort in the faith That the compass and the wheel Will lead me home

(Verse 2) I can hear the timbers creaking I fear it won’t be long And the faint hope these words reach you Know that I’ve loved you for so long Know that I’ve loved you for so long

(Chorus) I wish I could remain in your tender warm embrace All wrapped up inside the comfort that you bring Despite all this endless [sea] I seek comfort in faith That the compass and the wheel will lead me home

(Bridge) Carry me away Sweet Brooklyn calls my name When the kids were home and we were family

(Outro) Despite all these raging winds I’ll take comfort in the faith That the compass and the wheel Will lead me home
