South Jersey’s The Local 12 brings a breath of fresh air to the alt-rock scene with their debut album “Abandon.” Formed in 2018 from a casual jam session. The band consists of four members: Dave Iannucci on guitar and vocals, Dan Ream on keys, guitar, and vocals, Pat Ream on bass, and Eric Bailey on drums and vocals. Together, they have created ten tracks showcasing their impressive musical range and tight musicianship.

The album opens with a bang on “Wave at the Window.” Uplifting melodies and crisp interplay between piano and guitar create a nostalgic vibe, reminiscent of The Housemartins. Soaring vocals harmonize about letting go of the past, with lyrics like “headlights fading in the distance, waving at the window pane.” The track seamlessly transitions into the hauntingly beautiful “Godforsaken.” This bluesy ballad, with its melancholic piano and introspective lyrics about lost time, evokes a Nick Cave-esque atmosphere.

The band’s versatility shines throughout “Abandon.” “King of Small Time” injects a dose of infectious funk. Meanwhile “SU5” takes a more alternative, indie turn with its intriguing chord progressions and thought-provoking lyrics. The psychedelic rock influences surface in “In the Lighthouse.” This song builds tension and suspense with its dynamic shifts and impactful solos.

Abandon: A Captivating Debut

A standout track is “Hitchhiker’s Guide.” With its swirling keys and talkative guitar lines, this mellow song harks back to the glory days of 70s prog-rock, creating a captivating soundscape for the listener to explore. As the album progresses, “All She Wants…” injects full energy with its hype and single-worthy appeal. This song is perfect for a windows-down drive, with great lyrics and a band perfectly in sync.

The album closes on a powerful note with “Stranded.” This emotional ballad showcases the band’s ability to build to a crescendo, with piano, guitar, and even strings joining forces for a truly memorable finale. The song shifts from despair to hope with the powerful declaration, “chance to be somebody great.”

“Abandon” is a testament to The Local 12’s talent and songwriting prowess. Each track offers a unique flavor, yet the album maintains a cohesive feel thanks to the band’s tight musicianship and knack for melody. Whether you’re a fan of classic rock, alternative soundscapes, or introspective ballads, “Abandon” has something to offer. This debut is a successful exploration of genre and a promising start for a band poised to make waves in the music scene.
